Uncle Sam, leaning out of the page and pointing a stern finger under the words "I Want You for U.S. Army," is what sets this lithograph apart from other recruiting posters of its time. James Montgomery Flagg based the face on his own features, and the image first ran as a magazine cover in 1916 before the Army adopted it for wartime enlistment in 1917. The line "Nearest Recruiting Station" at the bottom sent men to local offices, and the design became one of the most widely reproduced American posters of the First World War.
