Uncle Sam addresses viewers directly in this 1918 poster, telling them they are expected to enlist by June 28 in a drive for War Savings Stamps. James Montgomery Flagg, whose Uncle Sam had already become famous through his 1917 "I Want You" recruiting poster, cast civilians as an "army of war savers" who would back up the fighting forces overseas. The Treasury's savings campaign asked ordinary Americans to lend money to the government, and posters like this one presented buying stamps as patriotic service.
