Its slogan, "Don't read American history - make it!", makes the pitch plainly: join the Navy and take part in history as the United States entered the First World War in 1917. James Montgomery Flagg, the illustrator best known for the "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster from the same year, designed it, and the H.C. Miner Litho. Co. of New York printed it in color. Recruiting posters like this one hung in post offices, storefronts and recruiting stations, where they aimed to turn wartime patriotism into enlistments.
