Here the Air Service sells military service as a route to a skilled trade, promising young men training they could carry into civilian work. Printed in Boston by the Forbes firm between 1917 and 1920, the poster appeals to mechanical aptitude at a time when airplanes were new and aviation mechanics were in high demand. Recruiting material like this was part of the Army's effort to build its aviation branch during the First World War, when the United States was expanding its air arm from a small force. Its promise of an occupation, rather than only a fight, is worth noticing.
