Recruiting poster no. 4 of the Army Medical Department lists the training a man could expect to receive, from x-ray work and practical pharmacy to dentistry, laboratory work, nursing, and mess management. Its caption and the caduceus, the winged staff that served as the Medical Department's emblem, give it a clear purpose. It was printed by the Government Printing Office in 1919 and dated November 3, 1919, a year after the Armistice. At that point the Army was shrinking from its wartime size while still needing skilled men, so posters like this one pitched technical trades as a reason to enlist in peacetime.
