Where many recruiting posters on this board make a general appeal, this 1920 example targets one branch, the Field Artillery, and promises travel, pay, schooling and excitement. It was printed in color at the Engineer Reproduction Plant at Washington Barracks in the District of Columbia, where the Army produced much of its own printed material. After the First World War the regular Army shrank sharply, so posters like this one aimed to draw volunteers who might otherwise choose civilian work. Its promise of a trade and a way out of routine work spoke to young men weighing their futures.
