Among the Army's recruiting posters of 1919, this one points to the schoolroom rather than the battlefield. Issued by the Government Printing Office as number 6 in an Ordnance Department series, it promotes Army training in ordnance operations, maintenance and repair. Printed in color halftone after the Armistice, it reflects the Army's effort to fill its peacetime ranks with enlistees who could learn skilled mechanical trades. The pitch was practical: a young man who trained in machinery or equipment repair could carry that skill into civilian industry, a promise that carried weight during the postwar years of rapid growth in automobiles and manufacturing.
