Rolf Armstrong's 1916 color poster for the Navy League of the United States speaks as much to women as to men, asking mothers, sisters, wives and sweethearts to help even if they are too old to enlist. Armstrong was best known for his glamorous illustrations, and his polished style makes the Navy look inviting to a civilian audience. Printed by The Knapp Co. of New York, the poster appeared a year before the United States entered World War I in 1917, when the nation was still debating how large its fleet should be.
