Few World War I recruiting posters addressed women directly, which sets this one apart. Its newspaper-style "Extra" headline and its call for women to apply at recruiting stations reflect a Navy that, in 1917, opened its Naval Reserve to women for clerical and communications work, freeing men for sea duty. Those women came to be called Yeomanettes, and the poster shows how the service sought to present naval work as patriotic and respectable for women. Printed by J.H. Tooker Print Co. in New York, it is a useful record of how wartime recruiting broadened its appeal.
