This text-only poster is set up like a newspaper "Extra," with a bold headline calling on women to join the U.S. Navy at once. That was a striking move in 1917, when the Navy was still a male service. Early that year the Navy opened enlistment to women as clerical and administrative personnel, often called "Yeomanettes," to free men for sea duty after the United States entered the First World War. The poster's printer, J. H. Tooker of New York, was a commercial lithography firm, and its plain wording shows how recruiters relied on words alone to reach a new audience.
