Its message is framed as a question: a contented soldier, the line "He's happy & satisfied," and then the challenge "Are you?" aimed straight at the viewer. Issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in London, it is numbered 96 in that body's poster series and was printed in color by Turner & Dunnett of London and Liverpool. The committee was set up in 1915, when Britain still relied on volunteers and conscription had not yet begun in 1916, so posters like this one worked to persuade men to enlist. It is worth noticing how the poster sells military service as satisfaction rather than danger, a tone many recruiting posters of the period adopted.
