Unlike the better-known pointing-finger design, this poster uses a studio portrait of Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, taken by the London photographers Bassano, with a short command beneath it: "Enlist to-day." Kitchener had been Secretary of State for War since August 1914, and his face was among the most recognizable in Britain as the country built a volunteer army. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee issued this series in 1915, and the printer, David Allen & Sons of Harrow, produced it in color lithograph and halftone. Kitchener's authority lent the appeal its weight, and he died in 1916 when HMS Hampshire struck a mine off Orkney.
