The slogan "Remember Scarborough!" points to a specific event: on 16 December 1914, German battlecruisers shelled the English seaside town of Scarborough, along with Hartlepool and Whitby, killing civilians and damaging homes and shops. The raid was among the first times the British mainland had come under direct attack in the war, and recruiters used it to turn that anger into enlistment. The poster's blunt command to join up reflects the recruiting drives of 1915, when Britain still relied on volunteers and public outrage over the bombardment was a useful tool for filling the ranks.
