Designed by the painter Frank Brangwyn, an Associate of the Royal Academy, this 1915 London poster asks civilians to fund tobacco for soldiers at the front. Its text gives the terms: a £5 subscription would supply each man in a regiment with an ounce of tobacco, or 5 shillings would provide the same for each man in a company. A quoted Red Cross worker in France testifies to how badly the fighters wanted it. The appeal rests on a small, ordinary comfort, which shows how much wartime fundraising relied on everyday needs as much as on patriotism.
