Here the British Empire appears as a lion, an old, powerful beast backed by "young lions," the overseas states that answered the call to arms. Animal painter Arthur Wardle drew the image for the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, a body formed in 1915 to encourage voluntary enlistment before Britain introduced conscription in early 1916. The bold "Enlist now" appeal addresses men across the Empire, and the color lithograph and simple, forceful composition are typical of the recruiting art of the period.
