Frank Brangwyn's 1915 color lithograph advertises a St. David's Day matinee on March 1 at the Alhambra in Leicester Square, with the proceeds going to a National Fund for the Welsh troops. St. David's Day, the feast of Wales's patron saint, gave the event a national identity, and the poster's bold, graphic style reflects Brangwyn's reputation as one of Britain's leading decorative artists. Wartime Britain relied heavily on charity concerts, matinees and other entertainments to raise money for soldiers and their families, and posters like this one were pasted on streets and in theaters to draw audiences.
