Few recruiting posters from 1915 put a London landmark at the center the way this one does, pairing St. Paul's Cathedral with a display of flags and a direct appeal to the city's men. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, which issued it, was formed that year to encourage voluntary enlistment as casualties mounted and the army needed far more men. The text promises that more recruits will shorten the war and closes with "God save the king," linking personal duty to national loyalty. The color lithograph was printed in Newcastle-on-Tyne, a reminder that such posters were produced and distributed across Britain.
