At University College on Gower Street in London, this 1915 lithograph announces a month-long exhibition from April 7 to 27, with an admission charge of one shilling and contributions directed to the Belgium Town Planning Committee. Frank Brangwyn, the British painter and designer who was an Associate of the Royal Academy, drew the poster during the first year of the war, when Belgium's towns and cities had been damaged by the German invasion of 1914. The exhibition aimed to help Belgians prepare plans for rebuilding after the fighting ended. Posters like this one show how British artists and organizations tried to turn wartime sympathy into practical support for civilians.
