Rather than a general call to arms, this poster points to a specific place: Neuve-Chapelle, a village in northern France where British troops attacked in March 1915. That offensive was among the first large British attacks of the war, and it cost heavy losses for limited gains, a reality that fed the push for new volunteers. Painter and printmaker Frank Brangwyn, an Associate of the Royal Academy, designed the lithograph. Its plea to "Be a man" ties personal duty to the fate of soldiers already in the trenches.
