John Bull, the cartoon personification of Britain, points straight out of this 1915 color lithograph and asks viewers whether they are the missing man. Printed by Andrew Reid & Co. of Newcastle-on-Tyne as poster no. 125, it belongs to Britain's voluntary recruiting campaign, which ran until conscription began in January 1916. The record credits the design to Joseph Binder, and the direct address of the pointing figure shows how recruiting posters turned a general appeal into a personal question.
