A long, narrow strip measuring 13 by 75 centimeters, this poster uses searchlights as its subject, a motif that suits its stretched format. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, a London body formed in 1915 to encourage voluntary enlistment, issued it as one of a numbered series. Its slogan, "Each recruit brings peace nearer," linked individual enlistment to the hope of ending the war, appealing to men who had not yet volunteered. It was printed by Andrew Reid & Co. in Newcastle-on-Tyne, which shows that the campaign's materials reached well beyond the capital.
