Women are the direct audience of this 1916 lithograph, which uses a megaphone and the words "Women awake!" to call them into national service through the Navy League. It was issued before the United States entered the First World War in 1917, during a preparedness campaign that pressed Americans to strengthen the military, the navy above all. The Navy League, founded in 1902, enlisted women as volunteers to support the fleet at home, a role that foreshadowed the Navy's wartime enrollment of women in clerical and support jobs. The poster is credited to Hazel Roberts, and its bold color printing was built to catch the eye of passersby.
