Kitchener's pointed finger and steady gaze make this one of the most recognizable images of the First World War, though it began as a magazine cover. Alfred Leete drew it for the London weekly *London Opinion*, and it appeared in 1914, soon after Britain entered the war in August. Horatio Herbert Kitchener, the veteran field marshal then serving as Secretary of State for War, was the man it portrayed. The image was later widely reprinted as a recruiting poster, and its direct address to the viewer became a model for later war propaganda.
