Edward Penfield's 1918 lithograph asks American viewers to help the women of France by saving wheat, a plea that tied the home front to the farms of an ally at war. With so many French men away fighting, women had taken over much of the field work that kept the country fed, and the United States, which had its own wheat to send, was urged to conserve flour so that surplus could cross the Atlantic. Penfield, a well-known illustrator of the era, was among the artists the federal government recruited to produce posters that made food rationing feel like a personal contribution to the war effort.
