This poster by Adolph Treidler urges Americans to eat cornmeal, rye flour, oatmeal, and barley so that wheat could go to the fighting forces. Printed in New York in 1917, it is one of the numbered posters issued by the United States Food Administration, the wartime agency headed by Herbert Hoover. That year, Congress gave the agency authority to regulate food supplies, and wheat was in high demand to feed troops and Allied countries in Europe. Posters like this one asked ordinary households to make small changes at the dinner table as a form of patriotic service.
