Where many wartime posters urged Americans to buy bonds or enlist, this Food Administration lithograph focuses on the kitchen, telling households to bake, boil, and broil more and fry less. The W.F. Powers Co. of New York printed it in 1917, and it is numbered 105 in the Food Administration's poster series. Herbert Hoover's agency, created that August, asked families to save fats, wheat, and meat so that supplies could reach the Allied armies and civilians in Europe. Frying used a great deal of fat, which made it an obvious target for the appeal.
