Help your boy at the front" frames this 1917 color lithograph as a direct appeal to the home kitchen, linking everyday food choices to soldiers overseas. Issued under the United States Food Administration, it asks households to use less wheat and meat so more supplies could be sent to the Allied armies and to civilians in Europe. Herbert Hoover led the agency, which was created that summer to encourage voluntary conservation through wheatless and meatless meals. Posters like this one carried that message into shops and homes, placing much of the wartime food effort on the women who planned and bought for their families.
