Few posters in the Work Projects Administration collection speak as directly to a Philadelphia household as this 1941 silkscreen, which asks residents to help preserve surplus food rather than let it spoil. The poster was produced under the Federal Art Project and credits a coalition that included Community Food Conservation Inc., church groups, a garden club, Pennsylvania State College, the Navy League, and the Philadelphia Council of Defense. Its appeal reflects the home-front effort of the early war years, when canning and preserving were encouraged as a way to stretch food supplies. Worth noticing is how the piece treats domestic food work as a civic duty.
