Few wartime posters name specific optical brands, but this one lists Zeiss alongside the American maker Bausch & Lomb and asks households to lend their binoculars to the war effort. Printed in 1941, before the United States entered the war, it reflects the anxiety over German U-boats in the Atlantic and the need for civilian binoculars to help spot them from shore and sea. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced it as a silkscreen, a method that gave poster artists bold flat color at low cost. The poster's blunt, direct message is typical of the period's home-front appeals.
