The message is blunt: protect your hands, because you work with them. The poster dates to 1936 and was made under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, whose artists produced silkscreen posters with bold color and simple images meant to reach workers who would not read a long safety manual. Hand injuries were a common and costly part of factory, construction and other manual labor in the 1930s, and the poster ties protection directly to a worker's livelihood. The date stamped on the back, October 31, 1936, places it during the program's busiest years.
