This 1941 recruiting poster from the Office of Civilian Defense asks ordinary Americans to join decontamination squads, teams trained to wash down streets, buildings and people after a chemical attack. It was produced as a silkscreen print under the Federal Art Project and is credited to an artist identified only as John M. The Office of Civilian Defense had been created that spring to prepare American communities for possible air raids and gas warfare before the country entered the war. A January 1943 date stamped on the front suggests the poster stayed in use well after its first printing.
