This 1941 silkscreen poster was made for the New York City Fire Department to recruit volunteers for its Fire Department Auxiliary Corps, and its title, "Home safety is home defense," ties civilian fire work to the wartime home front. The record notes that 10,000 copies were printed under the Federal Art Project, part of the Work Projects Administration, which employed artists during the Depression and put their work to public use. Fire Commissioner Patrick Walsh and Mayor Fiorello La Guardia are named as the city officials behind the campaign. Before the United States entered the war in December 1941, cities were already organizing volunteers to handle fires and emergencies if air raids or other disasters struck.
