Few posters on this board pair a stage comedy with a heart motif quite like this one, which advertises Avery Hopwood's *Why Men Leave Home* as a Federal theater Project production in Los Angeles. Hopwood, who died in 1928, wrote popular light comedies for the American stage in the 1910s and 1920s. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed out-of-work theater people during the Depression, and its posters were produced by artists on the same federal payroll. The hearts fit a romantic comedy and give the design its playful tone.
