The Alarm Clock was a comedy by Avery Hopwood, a prolific Broadway playwright whose light farces were popular in the 1910s and 1920s, and he died in 1928. This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a California staging sponsored by the Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that employed out-of-work actors, writers and designers from 1935 to 1939. Silkscreen was an economical method for printing in quantity, which suited a project that needed posters for many productions across many cities. The poster's flat, saturated color and bold lettering reflect the work of the WPA Art Program, whose artists produced thousands of such designs.
