The Federal theater Project revived Avery Hopwood's comedy *Why Men Leave Home* in Los Angeles in 1938, and this silkscreen poster promotes that production. Hopwood, a Broadway writer of farces who died in 1928, had been dead for a decade by then, so the revival relied on a playwright whose popular comedies were still familiar to audiences. The heart motif fits a story about marriage and the restlessness that pulls couples apart. Posters like this one advertised plays staged by theater workers who had lost jobs in the Depression, and they show how the program turned commercial-style advertising into bold, inexpensive public art.
