A silkscreen poster for a 1938 Los Angeles staging of Avery Hopwood's comedy *Why Men Leave Home* stands out for its heart motif, a symbol that signals the play's romantic farce. Hopwood, a prolific Broadway playwright of the 1910s and 1920s, wrote the play in 1922. The Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, staged it during the Depression as part of a national effort to put actors, designers and stagehands back to work. Posters like this one advertised the Project's productions, and their bold flat color and simple shapes made them effective street-level publicity.
