The lottery prize at the center of this 1938 poster, "Dus groise Gevins" (rendered here as "The 200000"), is the fortune that drives this three-act Yiddish folk comedy by Sholem Aleichem, the writer whose stories of Eastern European Jewish life, from the shtetl to the city, made him one of the great Yiddish authors. He died in 1916, and his work was still widely staged in the 1930s. The production was sponsored by the Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that employed theater workers during the Depression, and this show was presented in Boston as a benefit for the Boston Bicker Cholim Association, a Jewish mutual aid society that visited the sick. The poster's subject tags mention sewing, a reminder of how many immigrant Jewish families earned their living in the needle trades.
