Few posters from the Federal theater Project's Los Angeles unit make the connection to 1930s money worries as directly as this one. The comedy *Help Yourself* was staged in 1937, when the Depression was still squeezing household budgets and public trust in banks was low after the wave of bank failures and the nationwide banking holiday of 1933. The play's banking theme gave the poster an easy hook for a light, satirical night at the theater. Paul Vulpius designed it as a silkscreen, a method the WPA poster workshops used to produce bold, inexpensive images that could be printed in quantity and pasted across town.
