*Help Yourself*, a three-act comedy, comes from 1937 and was sponsored by the Federal theater Project, the part of the Works Progress Administration that put unemployed theater workers back on stage. The poster's subject tags tie the play to banking in California, a subject many residents followed closely after the bank failures and foreclosures of the early Depression. The project employed actors, directors and stagehands who had lost work during the slump, and it staged productions across the country at low ticket prices. Silkscreen posters like this one were made by the WPA's art program to advertise such shows, and they are now studied as examples of American graphic design from the period.
