Few Depression-era theater posters pair a classic playwright with a government program quite like this one. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed out-of-work theater workers from 1935 to 1939 and staged plays cheaply for local audiences. This 1936 silkscreen advertises a Los Angeles production of George Bernard Shaw's three-act comedy *Captain Brassbound's Conversion*, which Shaw wrote in 1900 about a former slave trader turned self-appointed moralist. The silkscreen method was typical of the WPA poster workshops, which produced inexpensive designs in quantity.
