Few posters from the Federal theater Project name a Los Angeles production as directly as this one, which advertises a 1938 staging of *To the Ladies*, the satirical comedy written by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly. The play had first reached Broadway in 1922, and its satire of social life suited the Project's touring and stage companies. The Federal theater Project was one of several New Deal arts programs that put actors, designers and printers to work during the Depression, and this silkscreen color poster shows how those artists turned live theater into bold street advertising.
