Few theater posters of the period pair a Shaw title with a lion quite like this one, which advertises a Negro theater Project production of George Bernard Shaw's comedy *Androcles and the Lion*. The Federal theater Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to put out-of-work theater people back to work during the Depression, and its New York Negro theater Project staged classic plays with Black casts for audiences the commercial stage had largely overlooked. The silkscreen print comes from the WPA's Federal Art Project poster division, and its flat color and bold lettering show the graphic style of the program's advertising. A June 1939 date stamp on the back suggests the sheet was handled and filed years after it was printed.
