The skeleton at the center of this 1936 poster sets it apart from the other Federal theater Project posters on the board. It advertises a New York production of Christopher Marlowe's *Doctor Faustus*, the Elizabethan tragedy about a scholar who trades his soul for knowledge and power, and the bony figure signals the play's themes of death and damnation. The Federal theater Project was a branch of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to employ actors, designers and stagehands during the Great Depression. Its posters were printed by silkscreen, a relatively inexpensive method that let the project market productions cheaply across the city.
