Under the slogan "Home safety is front line defense," this silkscreen poster by John Wagner argues that the household was a battleground in its own right. Produced by the WPA War Services in New York City between about 1941 and 1943, it reflects a period when the federal Works Progress Administration's artists turned their skills to wartime messages. The poster's central idea was that preventing home accidents and fires would conserve labor, materials and attention for the war effort. Its pairing of "Conserve" and "protect" shows how such posters urged civilians to take part in the national defense without leaving home.
