Few posters from the Federal theater Project's road shows name a place as specifically as this one, which announces a 1936 production in San Bernardino, California. The Federal theater Project, one of four arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, sent touring companies to towns that seldom saw live drama, often staging plays in schools, halls, and other available venues. Its posters were printed by silkscreen, a stencil process that allowed designers to use flat, bold areas of color at modest cost. The result is a small, vivid record of a national effort to bring theater to ordinary audiences during the Depression.
