This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises *What Anne Brought Home*, a Federal theater Project production in California. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed actors, directors and designers during the Depression and staged plays for audiences who often could not afford a regular night at the theater. WPA Art Program posters like this one were printed by silkscreen, a method that made bold, inexpensive images that could be produced in quantity and posted quickly across towns. Silkscreen work of this kind generally relied on flat areas of color and simplified shapes, which suited both the speed of production and the need for posters to be read at a glance.
