A 1940 silkscreen poster asks the question "What of teaching?" and promotes an exhibit by Illinois state teachers colleges at a fair in Springfield, the state capital. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the design. Its poster division turned silkscreen printing into a low-cost way to make public-information posters, and many of these prints advertised exhibits, classes, and public health campaigns across the country. The work reflects the late-1930s effort to show public schools and teacher training as a civic concern, at a time when many Depression-era communities were still rebuilding their schools.
