Few WPA posters take up paint, which sets this one apart from the concert, theater, and public health notices that dominate the series. It promotes an exhibit centered on testing and research into paint materials, a technical subject that the Federal Art Project turned into eye-catching graphic design. During the Depression, the program employed artists across the country, and its Massachusetts units produced many silkscreen posters that relied on flat, bold color and simplified shapes to reach a broad public. The color printing here is worth a close look, since it shows how much the medium depended on layered inks.
