This poster advertises an exhibition on welfare services in Chicago, a subject that set it apart from the many Federal Art Project posters that promoted concerts, classes, and museum shows. Its record lists it as a 1936 silkscreen print sponsored by the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which hired artists during the Great Depression to make public information and cultural materials. Silkscreen was a method the Federal Art Project's poster units used to produce large, flat-color designs at low cost, and Chicago was among the cities where that work was especially active. A date stamp on the back, March 20, 1941, shows the sheet was still being handled and filed years after it was printed.
