A steamboat, a familiar sight on American rivers, anchors this poster for a Federal theater production called *Excursion*, tying the play's outing theme to a vessel that was once a common sight on the nation's waterways. The Federal theater Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, running from 1935 until Congress ended its funding in 1939, and it employed out-of-work actors, designers and artists. Its posters were printed in large numbers to advertise productions across the country, so this piece shows how Depression-era artists brought commercial lithography and stage promotion together.
